Did you know that our most traditional production facility is in the city of Newport in South Wales. The factory started impregnation as early as 1848, then under the name Burt Boulton & Haywood.

With a total of 34 employees the Newport factory impregnates both utility poles and fence posts for the UK and Irish markets.

Previously a customer of Iivari Mononen, Burt Boulton & Haywood was acquired in 2015 and became part of the Scanpole Group.

Historically the majority of the production in Newport was the fabrication and impregnation of poles for the electricity and telecom industries, with some limited fencing being produced for the agricultural and equestrian sectors. Following the acquisition the increased impregnation capacity within the Scanpole Group has allowed the fencing market to grow to the point where Scanpole are now the market leaders in the supply of creosoted Fencing to the agricultural and Equestrian Market in the UK.

Pieter Van Tilburg, who works as Ilsengs production coordinator, describes himself as an intermediary between the production management and the employees. In short, Pieters job is to ensure that the poles delivered to customers are completed on time and that the quality of the products remains high. An integral part of his work is also communication with sales personnel and production planning so that all market segments receive their products on time.
With the new Pole+ products, Pieter has also been closely involved in product development.
While developing Pole+ products, I have been involved in developing a product that is at the forefront of development and the future alternative to creosote. It was a great feeling when we got the product to work.
Pieter has a 10-year career at Scanpole. He previously worked in the hotel industry, started as an impregnator, gradually progressing to more responsible positions. He highlights experience from different tasks as an important part of succeeding at work. Because the work is done with natural products, problem-solving skills play an important role.
I love my job and the work community. The people at the factory are like a own family, and you can work independently, he sums up the positive aspects of Ilsengs work community and continues:
I experience feelings of success in my work every time a pole load goes to a customer or I see our products in use. Thats how I know that the production chain has been successful.
Although Pieter considers the work community to be a family, his children are waiting for him at home after work: Family is important to me. Work rushes are forgotten when spending time with them.
